Daniel Gillies as Elijah Mikaelson in The Originals spin-off of The Vampire DiariesDaniel Gillies Cast as Elijah Mikaelson in The Originals

On January 22, 2013, it was officially announced that Daniel Gillies would be continuing his The Vampire Diaries role as Elijah Mikaelson. When the first-born son of the family died, Elijah became the oldest child and therefore the oldest Original vampire. When Elijah was human, he was an honorable and moral person, as well as being compassionate. When he was made into a vampire, these qualities were enhanced and magnified. He has a strong belief in honor and loyalty, and is a man of his word. When he says he’s going to do something, he does it; to a point. He is probably the most human of all the Originals and will only kill, without remorse, if absolutely necessary or when it suits his needs.

Elijah Mikaelson is extremely intelligent, so he never acts rashly because he plans ahead carefully and meticulously to do whatever he feels he must do or to get whatever he wants to get. Some people may consider this manipulative, but it makes him unpredictably dangerous and difficult to trust. However, in spite of everything, the most important thing that he values most is his family. After their mother died, Elijah, Klaus, and Rebekah swore a pack to each other that they would always stick together. Elijah helped Klaus release his werewolf side, and refused to leave Klaus behind when they were being hunted by Alaric. No matter what Klaus does, he’s still Elijah’s brother.  A great quote from The Vampire Diaries “All My Children” episode is, “Mother made us vampires. She didn’t make us monsters, we did that to ourselves.”

It was exciting when Elijah Mikaelson came on the scene because it heightened the stakes by putting Elena in danger. Elijah had been looking for the Petrova doppelgänger, and he thought he had her until Stefen and Damon came to her rescue and staked him. However, being a super powerful original, he eventually came revived himself and pulled out the stake. Game back on!

Using a locator spell he manages to track Elena down, but decides to let her and Damon live so Damon can protect her and keep her from Klaus who wants to use her blood to create more vampire/werewolf hybrids. After Elijah meets Elena’s aunt, Jenna, she invites him into the house and he promises to keep Elena and her family safe because he wants her to help him kill Klaus. Episodes later, Elijah goes to a dinner party with Damon, Stefan, Elena, Alaric, etc. Damon plans to stake Elijah, but Elijah warns him that if he crosses him that he’ll kill everybody in the house. When Alaric realizes that a vampire can’t use the dagger to kill Elijah because it would kill him, too, Alaric stabs Elijah, apparently killing him. However, it the dagger doesn’t remain in an Original they won’t stay dead.

When the curse is eventually broken, and Klaus is near death, Elijah is ready to rip his heart out. Then Klaus tells him their family isn’t buried at sea after all. They’re safe, but if he dies Elijah will never know where they are. Elijah save Klaus and helps him get away. Two days later, after Klaus wakes from his transformation he keeps his word to Elijah about telling him where their family is by stabbing him with the dagger. Elijah is finally reunited with this family when his coffin joins theirs.

So who is Daniel Gillies who is returning to bring Elijah Michaelson back to life? Daniel was born in Canadian, but grew up in New Zealand. He’s been acting since 1998 when he played a medic in “A Soldier’s Sweetheart.” Some of his roles included playing John Jameson in “Spider-Man 2,” the fiancée to Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson, and he appeared in the movie “The Sensation of Sight” with Ian Somerhalder and David Strathairn. Some of his other TV gigs have included HBO’s “True Blood,” “NCIS,” and A&E’s “The Glades.” He’s also no strange to the theater, having been in over twenty plays including such classics as “Julius Caesar,” “Long Day’s Journey into Night,” and “The Judas Kiss.” Although he’s also cast as Dr. Joel Goran in the Canadian series “Saving Hope,” he says it won’t interfere with his work in “The Originals.” In 2012 Daniel wrote and directed “Broken Kingdom,” his first independent film, which he and his wife both star in. Maybe he’ll get the chance to write and/or direct some episodes of “The Originals”!
