Joseph Morgan Cast as Niklaus (Klaus) Mikaelson in The Originals
It was announced on January 11, 2013, that Joseph Morgan, who plays the secretly sensitive but outwardly badass Klaus, would be one of the first regulars added to the new The Originals spin-off of The Vampire Diaries. The April 25th episode of The Vampire Diaries will be the backdoor pilot of the show, which will be set in New Orleans, a town Klaus helped build way back when. Joseph will be traveling to the Big Easy the week of March 11 to shoot it, but when the series is picked up by the CW they’ll be filming primarily in Atlanta where The Vampire Diaries is filmed so they can do lots of cross-overs! Joseph Morgan mentioned there would be some huge transitions and reveals in the April 25th episode which will change his character forever, and promises that we’re going to see Klaus more badass and “cooler than he’s ever been” but there will still be “moments of vulnerability” that will show his sensitive side.
In the episode, Klaus will be returning to French Quarter of New Orleans to find his protégé Marcel (played by Charles Michael Davis), its unofficial king. Klaus’ brother, Elijah, will be helping Klaus find redemption by siding with Marcel’s enemies to help keep Klaus in line. But we won’t lose the Klaroline relationship, because Joseph promises that she’ll be making some New Orleans visits! The Originals will be a little more adult and more gothic since these are much older vampires than the ones on The Vampire Diaires.
The original vampires are the second most powerful vampires/immortals, with Silas being the first. This is because they weren’t created like normal vampires, but directly by magic by their mother Esther. When Klaus, the third oldest sibling or the Originals, transformed he accidentally activated his werewolf side, revealing Esther’s infidelity with a werewolf. So Klaus is a vampire/werewolf hybrid. Their only weakness is that they can be killed by a stake carved from the White Oak Tree, the tree that gave them their original immortality. In spite of this weakness, they are much stronger, faster, and have much heightened senses, than other vampires. They also heal much faster. As The Originals air it will be exciting to learn all the other powers and abilities they possess over your normal, run-of-the-mill, vampires, as well as learn more about their background and some of the adventures they’ve had from the time they were magically created and now.
Now a little bit about the man who will continue to bring Klaus to life. Joseph is originally from London and lived in Swansea for 11 years where he studied at the Central school of Speech and Drama in his late teens. In addition to The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, he played Spartan Lysander in the film “Immortals” with Superman actor Henry Cavill. Joseph loves to read, and his favorite author is Stephen King, of which “The Stand” is his favorite King book. He also loves Gordon Ramsey, so he must also love to eat, especially steak! He loves zombie movies and is a huge fan of “The Walking Dead.” His favorite movie is “Interview with a Vampire” and his favorite musical is “Little Shop of Horrors.” He is skilled in martial arts, loves doing his own stunts, and loves to jump from high places into water. One thing that he doesn’t like is spiders, and the one thing he never leaves home without is his phone.
